Cyber Attacks – threats to education

In light of recent cyber attacks targeting schools, we are taking this opportunity to reach out to schools with some hints and tips around how you can ensure your school is as secure and prepared as possible, should the worst happen.

An excellent place to start is checking with your current provider to ensure your school meets the DfE Technology Standards and read the detailed guidance from the National Cyber Security Centre.

Here are some key areas we recommend checking

  1. Broadband Backup Lines: Verifying the presence and effectiveness of a backup broadband line to ensure uninterrupted connectivity in case of primary line failures or cyber incidents.
  2. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Ensuring that MFA is implemented across your systems adds an extra layer of security and protects against unauthorised access, and susceptible data.
  3. Microsoft A3 and A5 Licenses: Confirming that your Microsoft A3 and A5 licenses are correctly assigned and fully utilised to leverage advanced security features and capabilities provided by Microsoft.
  4. Security Updates: Verifying that all systems, software, and applications are regularly updated with the latest patches and security fixes to mitigate vulnerabilities and minimise the risk of exploitation by cyber threats.
  5. Backups: Review backup systems for onsite and offsite platforms to ensure data integrity, resilience, and the ability to recover during data loss or ransomware attacks swiftly.
  6. Filtering in Line with DfE Standards: Ensuring that content filtering mechanisms are aligned with DfE standards to regulate internet access, block malicious websites, and protect users from harmful content.

We would like to emphasise that one of the most effective ways to enhance the security posture of your IT infrastructure, especially within a school environment, is by transitioning to a cloud-based environment and investing in your cyber resilience, including staff training.

Moving to the cloud offers numerous benefits, including enhanced security, scalability, and accessibility. If you would like to find out more about cloud options – you are invited to attend our upcoming Cloud event on the 12th of March at 5 PM

These incidents highlight the importance of strong cybersecurity measures to safeguard educational institutions and ensure uninterrupted learning experiences.
